Guide

Scotland’s gin boom, on the ground

Scotland now has one of the densest gin scenes in Europe. Many makers sit inside whisky distilleries, using spare still time and local botanicals. Others are purpose-built city distilleries with cocktail bars attached. A gin tour here is rarely just a branded gift shop: you will usually see a copper still, smell juniper and citrus, and taste a range that includes classic London Dry, contemporary citrus gins and cask-aged expressions.

Edinburgh is the easiest city for gin. Edinburgh Gin, Holyrood and several smaller producers put stills in walking distance of hotels and whisky bars. Glasgow’s makers sit in former industrial buildings, often pairing gin with whisky under the same roof. Further north, Highland and island gins lean on coastal botanicals, pine, heather and local grain.

If you already know whisky, gin tours are a useful contrast: shorter production cycles, brighter botanicals, and a bartending culture that is happy to mix. If gin is your starting point, these listings keep the visit practical — where to go, what the tour includes, and how to book.

City distilleries

Edinburgh and Glasgow put gin stills, tasting rooms and cocktail bars in the middle of a city break.

Botanicals with a place

Scottish gins often use local citrus alternatives, coastal plants, heather and native berries alongside juniper.

Shared still houses

Plenty of whisky distilleries also make gin — one visit can cover both if you pick the right tour.
